Geographic Overview

The Republic of Iraq has a land area of 437,072 sq km. Iraq is distinguished by the variety of its geographic landforms, including level sedimentary plains and mountains. The country is divided into a mountainous northern area, a desert area in the west, and a large fertile plain in the middle and south of the country that is watered by the two rivers, the Tigris and the Euphrates. Iraq has a population of 36M, most of whom live in towns and cities.The Tigris River, originating in Turkey, is 1,718 km long. The Euphrates reaches 2,700 km and also springs from Turkey. The two rivers meet at the town of Qurna to form the river known as the Shatt al-Arab, which flows for another 185 km until it reaches the Arabian Gulf. Iraq is bordered by Turkey to the North; Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and the Arab Gulf to the South; Iran to the East; and Syria and Jordan to the West.Iraq is divided into 18 provinces. The capital city is Baghdad; in addition to Baghdad, major cities include Mosul, Basrah, and Erbil. Iraq's major resources consist of oil, natural gas, sulphur, phosphate, iron, kaoline, bauxite, limestone, gravel, and sand.

Population

Iraq has about 36M citizens, with a yearly population growth rate of 2.6%. The population is young, with 20% less than 20 years old. Over two-thirds of the population lives in urban areas.

Climate

The climate is hot and dry in summer, cool and damp in winter. Spring and fall are brief but pleasant. Between May and September, Average temperatures in Iraq range from 48 degrees Celsius (118.4 degrees Fahrenheit), in July and August, to below zero in January. Most of the precipitation occurs between December and April,

Transportation

Baghdad is the hub of the country’s transportation system. Baghdad’s international airport has served a number of international carriers, . The main means of public transportation are the red double-deck bus (introduced by the British) and the public taxi.

Cultural life

Baghdad has long been an active cultural centre for the Arab world, producing prominent sculptors, painters, poets, and writers. Iraqi poets, for example, pioneered the free-verse movement in Arabic. Among the most important museums in Baghdad is the Iraq Museum (1923), which contains important archaeological treasures from the history of Mesopotamia

Economy

Iraq is the world´s seventh biggest producer and exporter of oil. Shipments of crude oil account for 99 percent of total exports. Main export partners are: United States, India, China and South Korea. Others include: Italy, Japan, France and Syria. Iraq is a member of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), an international trade organization. Iraq's economy is dominated by the oil sector, which has traditionally provided about 95% of foreign exchange earnings

Promising investment opportunities

Iraq has many qualities to attract capital and investment, including the availability of natural resources such as oil and gas, as well as human resources and land for various uses, in addition to the large size of the Iraqi market and its geographic location. These provide opportunities for production, export and import. All of the foregoing factors are represented in the multiplicity and diversity of investment opportunities within various economic sectors. Iraq has witnessed a transformation in its economic philosophy; the goals and reasons for which are set out in Investment Law No. 13 for the year 2006, as amended. This has contributed to the promotion of investment in terms of focusing on the need to bring in technical expertise and scientific support for the process of establishing investment projects in Iraq, expanding and developing various fields and granting privileges and exemptions for these projects. The legislating of investment laws has been oriented towards attracting and encouraging foreign investment in Iraq that is in line with the required goals, and it is now possible to acquire various guarantees

Customs Ports

In Iraq, there are about fourteen customs centers distributed between the border ports and the free zones, which are allowed to enter the materials without collecting customs duties until they are removed from these areas. Most of these centers are land centers or free zones, and the only airport mentioned in the form is the international airport in Baghdad, in addition to two sea ports in the ports of Umm Qasr and Khor al-Zubayr.
